Cheer on the Chihuahuas; Adopt a Dog
The annual Running of the Chihuahuas has been rescheduled from Saturday May 7 to Sunday May 15 because of fowl weather concerns by organizers. The fun event is free and open to the public, and Chihuahuas, and will be held on District Pier from 2pm to 5pm. Spectators will enjoy cold Pacifico beer, live music, family fun, and of course, the races! The competing Chihuahuas and their humans have a chance for Wharf glory and cash.
The races match up to eight Chihuahuas in a 70 foot sprint on an official race track on District Pier. The winning Chihuahuas will face off in a championship heat. First place gets a trophy and $100, second place gets $75, third place gets $50.
The Running of the Chihuahuas is done all for a good cause and supports Rural Dog Rescue to raise awareness and to help find homes for adoptable dogs. Sponsored by El Jimador y Herradura Tequilas, several Wharf restaurants including Hank’s Oyster Bar, Cantina Bambina, Whiskey Charlie, and Mi Vida have drink specials featuring the names of dogs up for adoption.
Participating restaurants and their cocktails and some of the adoptable pups are listed below – scroll over photo for names:
